Depression is anger turned inwards, this is why most depressed people seem to go through extraordinary measures to sabotage themselves. Mostly by choosing to do nothing to help themselves and improve their lives. At it's worst depression is a catalyst for people to become motivated to harm themselves, either through infliction of self injury or suicide.
Treatment for depression involves clients going through the process of recognizing their feelings, they have otherwise ignored for a lengthy period of time and most importantly teaching clients not to become reactive to their feelings but rather develop an understanding of the beliefs they hold which influences their feelings. The understanding of beliefs becomes the primary focus of the therapeutic session as clients learn to tell the difference between their truths and lies, regarding the beliefs they hold about themselves and their relationships to others.
