Do you find your self in a seemingly never ending cycle of conflicts with others? From your personal to professional relationships?
Do you find yourself being at the last leg of a relationship or a job?
Or perhaps you have found yourself in legal trouble?
If you answered yes to at least three of four of these questions, then you are a shoe in candidate for anger management therapy.
So What is Anger?
Anger is an illusion, both a false negative and a false positive. Anger is a false negative because too often when we experience anger, our minds and bodies are being tricked into believing that we are in physical danger. It is also a false positive because not only are our minds and bodies being tricked into believing that we are in physical danger, we are also being tricked into believing that we have the power to change the situation to our favor.
The interesting thing is that when most of us truly find ourselves in physical danger, we experience fear, not anger. Think about it, what would be your immediate reaction be if you came face to face with a mountain lion while hiking on a trail? Now what would be your reaction if someone you don't like addressed you with an insult?
With the two given examples, the first scenario is a true negative, which will likely result in an experience of fear and a humbling reaction. While the second is a false negative and false positive, which will likely result in a display of arrogance and a childish reaction.
Just the same way that anger has nothing to do with helping you survive a face to face encounter with a mountain lion, anger has nothing to do with creating positive change in our societies and our personal lives. When you are humble, you are assertive, you are making smarter decisions and you are influencing positive change in your life.
What is Anger Management Training?
The purpose of anger management training is for the client to practice and develop as a new habit, being able to handle his or her emotional state of defensive arousal when triggered by predictable and unpredictable situations. A defensive state of emotional arousal is defined as experiencing intense feelings of pain, fear, hurt, shame, a desire for revenge, confusion all bottled into a heavy dose of anger.
Most well adjusted humans beings live their lives according a daily routine, and our routines help make our lives predictable and manageable. However as Issac Asimov is famously quoted, "the only constant is change", it is not unusual for people to meet change with resistance.
When people react with anger to any negative change to their daily routines, they unintentionally help create for themselves an outcome that is unmanageable.
